Distractions fill our daily lives and control our actions. Whether it be at work or whilst studying, distractions can slow down progress or halt it completely. Focus is required in order to be productive and achieve your goals. But how exactly do you focus? There are some very simple techniques that you can repeat in order to work in a distraction free zone and become more productive. Read on for a better way to stay focused.
Noise is one of the biggest distractions that we face. In the work place, busy people move around us performing their own tasks. At home, anything from music to the cars outside can hold us back from the work we are attempting. Whilst living with my family, there were constant sources of noise from multiple TV’s throughout the house. In order to block those out I attempted to play music through headphones, but that, whilst calming me down, was just as much of a distraction. My solution was to play instrumental music with no words. After a few minutes of attempting to focus on my work the music becomes background noise and allows me to work easily and efficiently.
Alternatively, if other people are not causing the distractions and instead they come from your own devices playing music or perhaps a film to entertain you whilst you work. Well, it will be far more productive for you to shut off all other devices and save the entertainment for after your work is done. Personally I used to play a movie or YouTube videos on my second PC monitor. With these moving images in my vision, I was completely distracted from the writing I was supposed to be doing. Anything which draws your focus from the task at hand is not helping you at all.
At work, it is harder to control the sources of distractions or the way in which you engage a task and allow yourself to focus. Here, I find that meditation is a less simple but more effective solution. I used to have a very busy mind which made everything I did far more complicated and I severely lacked any focus. By learning to meditate over a period of time, I was able to both consciously and subconsciously turn distractions into background noise that didn’t draw any of my focus. Of course this is not as easy as other solutions and far less immediate but in the long term it can help you to refocus yourself. It also benefits you in any other situations such as being on public transport where others are being loud or when trying to sleep whilst someone plays music outside.
Focus is a vital element of our daily lives. Minutes can turn to hours where no progress is made when distractions run amok. Attempt these methods of focusing and blocking out distractions to see how much you can change your daily productivity and increase your effectiveness. By eliminating that which holds you back, you are free to reach even greater heights and achieve your goals.
