We all have faced situations of severe restlessness and apprehension, where we cannot seem to calm our nerves. Such a state may be as a result of several things: Stress, Fear, Worry among others. We are unique beings with the ability to feel, both positive and negative elements.
When faced with that job interview, or an exam, it is natural to feel nervous. But what happens when the nerves become too much? For instance, someone wants to leave the house but a great sense of fear overwhelms them, and they cannot move. Anxiety can reach certain intense levels which no human being can comprehend.
However, there is hope in our God. Peter writes, “Cast all your anxiety to Him [God] for he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7) God cares for you, and he Has the best plans for you. Part of His plan is making us to triumph over whatever life brings to us, including anxiety.
How should we handle anxiety? First, we should be courageous. As children of God, we are called to walk in boldness. Courage is built when we choose entirely put our trust in God. God asked Joshua, “Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?” (Joshua 1:9) Joshua faced a tough task of taking the mantle from Moses. But God always reminded him not to be afraid.
What is it that awakens intense fear in you? That which puts your life on hold, God is saying, “Do not be afraid!” Whenever a voice of fear tries to speak, silence it with the Word of God. Remind yourself always that we are called to walk in boldness. Breakthrough is already made available for you; you have to walk in it.
Another way we can overcome anxiety is through faith. Trusting in God will silence every anxious thought in our minds. There is a saying: Fear knocked, faith opened, and Lo! No one was there. Anxiety will stop us from living our lives to the fullest. It will be the stumbling block to any Christian looking to grow and looking to make hard decisions.
Faith will restore our focus on God, rather than on what lays ahead. Absalom, David’s son, threatened the king’s life. It troubled David immensely, but his faith in God made him speak these words: “But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, my glory and the One who lifts my head.” (Psalm 3:3) No amount of fear could hold him back from running to God.
May you be confident even as you’re faced with every kind of threat and pressure, For the Lord is on your side. He will make you victorious!
