“I threw in the towel, God threw it back and said, ‘wipe your face you’re almost there.'”

Depression is a state that has affected over 300 million people worldwide today. It is a mental issue that can slowly suck the life out of a person. In extreme cases, it ends with suicide. Is it possible to be a Christian and still suffer depression? Yes, it is. At times, people may wonder where God is when they are faced with difficult situations that affect their mental and spiritual wellness.

As a Christian, what can you do when situations seem to weigh you down? How can you be strong when faced with huge disappointments in life? Is it possible to overcome depression?

We should understand that depression is not from God but from the devil. God has always purposed that we as His children enjoy wellness and growth in every area of our lives. However, our adversary, the thief, comes only to steal, kill and destroy. (John 10:10) But our Savior, Christ, came that we may have life in abundance.

How then, can we combat depression? Here is one way: Prayer.

Consider Jesus Christ. He faced a tough battle in the mind before he died. At the garden of Gethsemane, he felt heavy burdened because of the task that lay ahead. He was torn between the human will and God’s will. The pressure was so intense that his sweat was in the form of blood.

“And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly.” (Luke 22:43)

What did he do? He focused on the Father. He asked that the cup of suffering be taken away from him. He prayed that the Father’s will be done. This internal battle had weighed him down and taken his strength. But God came through and sent an angel to minister to him.

Prayer is a way that we can pour out our hearts to God. We have a father who is near the broken-hearted. David understood that he could pour himself out to God, and God would come through from him. He says, “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” (Psalm 56:8)

If there is one assurance we should have is that God is near us. He is not far away. Depression may come our way, but we need to focus on Him. He will see us through, for nothing is impossible with Him. He will never let go of us.

Be delivered from depression, believing that God is bigger than our problem… God is bigger that your depression… Have faith and hear the word of God.
